Hi, I currently have a fastpack 200 bag and my gear seems to outgrown it.

Ive looked for so long online to find a decent bag to fit my gear in but thought its always best to see what people think!

Im looking for a backpack type bag and it must hold...

50D with 100-400L attached
70-200 F4 L
17-55 2.8
50 F1.4
580EX

As well as all the usual cards/cleaning/batteries etc etc.

Ive looked at so many bags its driving me mad! Obviously I don't want a bag that wont fit it all in but I don't want a bag that will be far too big. I quite like the look of the Kata 3N1-30... anyone had any experience with it?

Thanks!

Have you thought about the Fastpack 350? You should fit all of the above in and the 350 isn't massive anyway. Though if you want some more room to play with have a look at the Lowepro Vertex stuff.

Yep ;)

I got it for my Nikon D300s + MB-D10 & Nikon 28-70 f2.8 - fits with space... Nikon 70-200mm VR fits with space either side - infact all the way round.. Flash in there as well.... Infact you

Plenty of space in the top compartment, you can even take out the bottom part of that (as its zipped) if you want more space... Side pockets x2

You can have it like a slingshot - left hand or right hand or even front load etc etc.... Backpack.... It seems to have more cominations than a Vauxhall Zafira

By the looks of the gear you have it will fit that lot in... I was gonna go for te 3n1-20 but was too tight to fit a sigma 100-300mm F4 in so got a deal on the 3n1-30 which the siggie was like a "nifty fifty" in it with the amount of space ;)

Does that help you or do you want to know anything else... Just let me know

I can vouch for the quality and usability of these bags too although i have the smaller 20 size. Fantastic quality and very well padded and will fit a lot more in than looks possible. The way they can be carried is great too, as Trig's says, with the adjustable strap taking you from sling to back pack very quickly. Is also the correct size for in flight hand luggage so you can keep an eye on your kit if travelling. It comes with a waterproof cover as standard too, a nice little touch i think, and also a handy memory card holder that velcro's in place inside the bag. Highly recommended bags!

I looked at the bigger fastpacks. I don't really like the 200 ive got now though so probably wouldn't get another.

Thanks trig.

Yeh that certainly helps. Im not entirely sure about the sizes of your gear in comparison to mine but im getting drawn towards the kata. If you wouldn't mind when you get chance could you maybe post a few pictures of the bag up with gear inside? I'd definitely appreciate that!

Cheers Neil, I looked at the smaller 20 and wasn't sure about the size. What do you fit in yours? Do like the kata bags. The fastpack isn't too bad but the thing that annoys me is the partition. I don't usually fill the top part with other stuff but always fill the bottom part, would be much easier if it wasn't split so much.

Thanks for the pointers fellas.

Yeah no prob.... Will sort some out...

Nice one, appreciate it.

Had a 30 for a couple of months but found access a bit restrictive for lens stored above the camera, the opening really needs to come back a couple more inches.

Currently using a Classified 160 from Lowepro which I find very good and can hold any three of my lenses at any one time.

I have shown 8x AA's to give you some idea on how much room is after my Nikon & 28-70 2.8..... Nikon 70-200mm VR at the top which will come out from either sides (slingshot) I have stood the flash up in this but I normally have it laying down...

this one is with it from the side, Nikon D300s & Nikon 28-70 2,8 attached & I can get the Nikon 70-200mm VR out easily enough as stated above....

excuse the rubbish on this one.....

The same as above but without the rubbish.... That has a zip that goes all the way round the edges so you can access the camera from there as well if need be...

Hope these were what you were looking for....

The June 2010 issue of Digital SLR Photography magazine has a big review of camera rucksacks and the D3N1-30 is one of the bags reviewed. it doesn't finish top.

Might be worth buying the magazine.

So far out of the ones that I have owned this Kata is the better of them all... I;ve had the tamrac 5375, tamrac pro's from 6 right thru to the 12, the lowepro AW mini trekker, lowepro slingshot 200AW & now this Kata...

I think its more of what you feel comfortable with really.....

In mine i keep all the stuff on the left plus various chargers (camera, flash battery) and a fair amount of stuff in the top like a rocket blower, cloths, tissues, pens and there is still room in there for keeping other bits and bobs like keys. Am planning to get a super wide zoom too and I reckon that will fit in the lower section with all the other hardware without a problem. For your kit though, i reckon you'll need the 30.

Neil

I had the same problem as you "a lex" and my top bag was going to be the Kata 3n1 30. The quality is great size is great, but it just wasnt right when I tried it out. I ended up buying a Think Tank which is just outstanding quality and very, very well thought out, you can see why they are recommened by the pros! Having said that it was a lot more money! after the amount of bags I've been though I'll always go and try them out now!

I did a little review on my blog.

Will have a look for that today then. Need a mag for the plane so will give that a read. Cheers.

Cheers Neil, I am swaying towards the 30 more and more. Just a shame no shops near me stock the kata, would of been so much easier if I could try it out.

Thanks Simon. Just had a quick look on your blog. The Think Tank looks a beast. Will look into that one too. Nice blog by the way, have booked marked it for reading later.

Cheers mate about the blog comment, just getting it started so its really nice to have positive feedback!

The Think Tank Hard Drive is a big bag, but they also do two smaller bags in this range which might be better suited.

Depending on where abouts you are in Yorkshire the Newcastle branch of Jacobs has a vast range of bags in store.

I liked in Jesmond for 3 years as I was at Newcastle Uni... the Jacobs was awesome there. Moved back home though last year.. :(

Keep up the work with the blog.

A bag that's a little different ....... F-Stop.

Just got mine; imported from the U.S.

It's a great bag, perhaps a little more rugged than most, but I find that good, It actually has the appearance of a rucksack rather than a camera bag, so advertising the contents of your luggage isn't quite so obvious.

It certainly isn't a small bag, though I'm advised it's small enough to carry onto a plane. It will also fit your laptop.

They have a good website, and free carriage over to the U.K. and I didn't pay any import charges.

Highly recommended!!!!

Paul.

Have you thought about a Lowepro Flipside 400AW? I've got similar gear to you and have just bought one of these as I've outgrown my current bag (Crumpler Loyal Chap) - also has the bonus of being all weather if you get caught out.

Did you go with the Kata 3N1-30 in the end as there was on ebay a week or so ago which went for under £40.... or was that you that got it
