I really enjoy macro work and am hoping to get a macro lens this side of christmas (or for xmas if my misses agrees!).

i'm using a canon 500 camera, can anyone recommend a reasonable macro lens for sub £300ish?

cheers

Raynox DCR-250 =£40
I used to have the Tamron 90mm f2.8 which is very sharp

The Sigma 50mm 2.8 Macro is well worth a look and should be well within your budget.

Depending on what you'd like it to do, you may need to go to 90 / 100mm length -> eg for insects a longer focal length is a benefit

The ones most commonly recommended are the Sigma 105mm, Tamron 90mm, and Canon 100mm. There are also shorter options which will give you less working distance. I went for the Canon option, as it doesn't extend when focussing, and has USM so is silent, which may or may not be important to you.

It's a fantastic lens, it was my favourite lens and it's only going as I've just got my hands on a 135mm L.

To be honest, all of the lenses are very good, and very sharp, you can't really go wrong
