Hello folks, new to the forum and don’t know anything about photography or equipment but joined looking for advice and recommendations for a compact digital camera for my niece.

I had been recommended the Canon SX740 HS however from what ive learned from my conversations with ChatGPT and Gemini, the photo quality isn’t the greatest.

The camera will be used by a 19 year old, mainly for photos on days/nights out with family and friends and maybe recording some videos from time to time. Budget is about £500 if anyone can offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello :D

If you are willing to buy used kit the Panasonic TZ100 and Sony RX100 range are worth a look and can be found under £500. These cameras have a 1" sensor which is much bigger than the sensor in most compact cameras so they should give better image quality than the usual small sensor compacts. I had the TZ100 as I wanted a camera with a fixed viewfinder and AFAIK the Sony RX100 range don't have one. The TZ100 has a 25-250mm zoom lens, I don't know what the Sony has. I think the Sony has the better lens but the Panasonic has a longer zoom and that fixed viewfinder.

Both of these cameras have all of the controls and modes that larger cameras have and can shoot raw but of course as they're much smaller so are their controls. Both are IMO well worth a look.

Good luck choosing.

To be honest, the quality of output from almost any compact camera won't be the greatest. does it have to be a super-zoom type or could it have just a modest zoom range from wide angle to moderate telephoto?
