I'm still using an old 17" monitor which I think gives the completely wrong ratio for PP software.

Could you please recommend a decent 19"

Which is best LED or LCD, resolution?

I'm a bit out of touch and would be thankfull for any guidance.

Can you stretch to a refurbished 22" Dell 2209WA off fleabay? About £175

Pretty much anything will do then. They will all have some form of issue at that price........ (sorry, maybe sounding harsh, but there are a reason why good monitors attract a premium)

I got one for about that much. At first I was unsure about spending the premium over TN monitors but as soon as I saw the photos on it I knew it was money well spent. Built like a tank too with very sturdy base. The only drawback was it made me hate my laptop monitor!
 
The dells are great, I managed to blag one at work.
 
I have found a reasonable priced 18.5" dell, resolution 1366x768.

My computer has resolutions of 1280x768 or 1280x1024.

What will this difference mean to the size of the picture :shrug:

Your computer should detect the monitor and give new resolutions.
 
also if it is for photo work. check its not a tn panel :) hopefully youll find a nice IPS... the difference is huge!
