you might get a used one too. Failing that, keep an eye out for a used 550ex. they tend to go for £125 and upwards.

Either of these units will serve you very well. I have both and like each one for different reasons.

The 550EX is more powerful and it has more bells and whistles. It can be used manually easier than the 420EX and it can also be used as a master with one or two 420EX, 550EX units or one 420EX and one 550EX.

The 420EX is smaller and lighter in weight that the 550EX and that is important since I carry a flash mounted on my camera most of the time for fill flash use, except when I know I will be specialoizing in landscapes.

A used 420EX should be considerably less expensive than a used 550EX and may very well fill yoiur needs.
