Is anyone going to this at Ascot this year?
I went last year and it was great fun so going back again this year.

Last year I took along a 70-200 f2.8 IS and a 1Dmk2 and also hired a 2x TC and came back with some pretty good shots.

This year I want to improve on those but not sure what the best way to go is.

I could hire a 400 f5.6 (which I have used in the past), would this have noticeably better IQ than the 70-200 and TC combo?

It would be nice to have a bit more reach. A 500mm is going to be a bit pricey just to go and have a bit of fun for the day and I am not sure if the extra 100mm of focal length is going to really be noticeable.

Alternatively, I could look at a 300mm f4 and a 2xTC which would be a reasonable cost.

Very rarely get to play with long focal lengths (ie anything over 200mm) so some advice from those who do would be great.

When is it? I'd love to goto that

15th and 16th this month, with the Sunday being the finals day.
Here are a few shots from last year.

Cool! I drove past ascot today and saw it was busy! I know why now

Will I struggle with a 200 2.8 on fx?

The last shot I put up was equivalent to 520mm with the crop factor of the body taken into account, plus a bit of cropping in post. I would say hire a 2xTC and you will be good for the start/finish line.

I want to get something a bit further round the course where they are pulling manoeuvres so am going to need something longer. Just what I don't know.

Sigma 150-500?

Just hit the button on the 300 f4 and 2xTC combo. Can't wait to have a play.
