refurbs, better than used?

Anyone have any experience with Cartex.co.uk ? In this weeks AP they are advertising Nikon refurbs at prices that seem lower than second hand, eg. D90 body £470, D5000 body £340, D60 with 18-55VR £300, plus others.
Are these Nikon refurbs do you think, it certainly says so in the ad. I wonder what the shutter actuation's are, or do Nikon refurbish to the extent that they really are like new with minimum clicks?
It is the first time I have heard of this company although they seem to be well established in the accessories market. Has anyone bought from them?
 
Nikon don't refurbish the cameras at all, that is done on their behalf by JP Solutions. The last two such refurbished cameras I bought were a D50 (SRS Microsystems, who stole the Nikon battery and replaced it with an HK one) and a D300 (Jessops), the D50 had over 3000 shots on it, a filthy sensor and an SD card in it with someone else's pics on it. The D300 had a similar number of actuations on it and a dead af motor. Both were returned for a full refund.

I honestly don't believe they refurbish the cameras at all, what I think happens is that they are given a quick once over and if the shutter fires and there's no cosmetic damage they are given a quick dust down and repackaged.
 
Hmm JP Solutions aren't that far from me. Was thinking of using them if my sony breaks down as they're a service partner for them.

The term refurbished doesn't really have much meaning for a consumer. If you say something is 're-manufactured' then there are rules on what this constitutes from what I've heard.

I did notice that Harrison cameras seem to offer a 12 month warranty with their second hand gear. I'd definitely go for a good quality second hand item from somewhere in mainland UK so it is easier to deal with problems.
