Remote Controls - D90

Can anybody advise on Remote Controls for the D90, please?
How directional is Nikon's own, the ML-L3? I'm thinking of using it to fire the camera at our bird table, but camera would be at about 90 deg. to the remote position. Would the Hama be more suitable as it seems to use a separate receiver?

Any comments and advice would be most helpful and welcome.

If you've got an old tv remote lying around (or buy one from the pound shop) some of these can be programmed to fire Nikon cameras. The one I reprogrammed, unlike the ML-L3, would fire the camera from behind and over a range of about 60ft...
