I have been experimenting with my camera and my sb900 flash, sometimes when I set the flash to remote it works a treat and other times it doesnt do a thing, each time I raise the built in flash on the camera to activate the remote flash. Any tips on what I am doing wrong please.

Also on the sb900 there is that defuser built in when I open the defuser it automatically sets the settings on the back of the flash to 10mm instead of what ever the camera and lens are actually set at. Is that normal?

It's not just a diffuser on the front of the flash, it's a wide angle diffuser so it spreads the light a lot wider than it would normally go hence showing the 10mm setting. You should use the drop down diffuser when you are in a confined space shooting with a wide angle lens and wanting to light up the whole area.

As for the remote flash, are you setting the in camera flash to commander mode with the -- setting so it just shoots out very minimal power?

Second question first, the built in diffuser is actually a "wide angle diffuser" and pulling it down causes the flash to automatically set itself to 10mm, so yes, it's normal.

First question, what settings do you have the camera and flash in when the flash fails to operate?

Thanks I wasnt aware that that was a wide angle diffuser thats cleared that up, as for which setting I use when it works and when it doesnt, erm embarressed to say I have no idea.

You need to go into the menus

you want e2 Flash cntrl for built-in flash set it to c for commander

Turn the on dial on the SB900 to "remote" take a shot and see if the SB900 fires.

Hi Wheels,
bit of a long shot but if you wear a brimmed hat it can press on the flip-up flash just enough to stop it firing (a tip I picked up on TP somewhere a while back which solved my problem).

good luck
