Replacement for 18-105mm Nikon D90

Hi Guys,

I need a replacement lens for my D90. basically I love the range of the 18-105 and have been using it for over 2 years.

What I want is a replacement lens that will give me the same range but produce better pictures, a better quality lens if you like.

I was going to buy the Nikon 24-70 2.8, but Im thinking that since I plan on going FX when the D800 or its equivalent comes out, Im better off waiting and buying them together, just in case they also release an update to the lens.

So what would you guys recommend my short list so far is:

Tamron 18-270mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD £500
Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G VR ED AF-S DX Lens £500
Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM - Nikon Fit £400
Nikon 24-120mm f4 G AF-S ED VR Lens £800
Nikon 24-85mm f2.8-4 D AF Lens £500
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 IF EX DG HSM - Nikon Fit £600

So out of the above lens which one would you go for? The range Im most interested in is probably 18- 85 range, although if the lens produces good pictures I could sacrifice a little and go for a 24-70.

Also do you guys think Nikon 24-70 is due an upgrade soon, and am i doing the right thing by waiting.

I primarilly use the camera to take portraits of kids, and as a walkabout snappy thing :)
 
If you want go FM later then it doesn't make sense to by any more dx lens?
If I were you , I would get the Nikon 24-120mm or Nikon 28-300.
 
I have used the kit lens, 18-105, 18-70, Tamron 28-75, Nikon 17-55 and now the 24-70.

The 24-70 wins hands down, and i wish i had it sooner. Great IQ and for me, perfect on DX. At times I would like wider but that is rare, when using the 17-55 I often wanted longer. If you plan to go FF then 24-70, but even if you were to stick with DX I would still recommend the 24-70 unless you really need wide.

The 24-120 f4 by all accounts is a very good lens, but even if the 24-70 is due to be replaced (which I doubt) I would not wait.
 
H'mmmm thanks for the advise guys, I really should take the plunge and get the 24-70, I know this is silly, but i'm worried that as soon as i buy it they'll announce its being replaced. I've read on some rumour sites that the plan is to replace it when the d800 is out.

But i guess based on reviews of the lens, a new one wouldnt really make many improvements :)
 
If a new one came out I am sure it would retail at say £1500+ and now much improvement can there be? Anyway, I doubt prices would plummet, so buy 2nd hand now for around £900 and worst case you may lose £100 if you sold and bought new version.
 
You could look around for a SH 28-70 f2.8 £600ish the iq is stunning
