Hi which lens would you go for

I have recently got a Sigma 18-50mm OS HSM F2.8-4 Is this a good lens to upgrade the standard 18-55 IS lens that comes with the canon?

I have a Canon 70-300 IS USM so the 20mm gap in the past has never bothered me but my other option is a trade with a friend of mine who has a 17-85 IS USM he finds too "Clunky and heavy" he uses the 55-250 lens so says he rarely uses the 17-85 past 50mm and will trade. I have read good things from the Sigma hence the reason I brought it but saying that a few friends swear by the 17-85 any advice guys?

Hope your Sigma is better than the sample I bought, went back for a refund. Preferred the non-stabilised Sigma 17-70 which was much sharper at the same settings, think I was just unlucky though.

Finally gave in when I realised my shakes needed a bit of help and went for a s/hand Canon 17-55 IS.

Unless you have the funds my advice is don't try one out because they are bloody marvellous and a huge step up from all the other similar range lenses I have tried.

Just remember you are perfectly ok with one kidney :lol:
 
Have not opened the Sigma yet it is still sealed in the box, incase I decide to change my mind again, never sure about second hand lenses just because I was stung once and am still battling with paypal to get money back for it.

Will remember the Kidney thing though wonder if my wife and son will donate theirs too.
 
Bought my lens s/hand from a shop on 10 days approval with 3 months warranty, so not that much of a gamble.
Sorry to hear you got ripped, think you would be pretty safe on the classifieds here especially with the feedback system

Couple of other options could be the Sigma 17-70 OS or the Tamron 17-50, stabilised or not

If you can stretch a bit more the Canon is I think the best crop lens available in that range
Maybe worth keeping the kit lens a bit longer to save the extra on top of the Sigma you bought
 
The problem with Sigma is that, whilst at their best they can be awesome, their QC is dire and far too many poor samples seem to get out of the factory. Also, with regards to the new OS HSM models, it's far from certain that they'll live up to the optical quality of their predessors and there seems to be an alarming lack of reviews of them.
 
Yes I noticed that when I got this one the reviews that I found seemed to point to a lens that was better that the kit lens, i brought it and now think I might have jumped the gun al little was not overly expenive and I could return it and spend a bit more just not sure what to go for, I tend to use ot for landscapes and portraits most of the time maybe a 17-70 would be a better option.
