I need to replace a Smartflash 150W modelling lamp bulb. Is there any reason I can't replace it with a 250W bulb?

No problem at all, as long as you have adequate ventilation - i.e. don't use modifiers such as honeycombs or snoots. And don't use too long a shutter speed, in case the extra light from the brighter modelling lamp is enough to affect the exposure, colour temperature or both.

Some flash units cannot exceed certain Wattage of their modelling light...Paul Buff recommended going no higher than a certain wattage (not going to 250W) for their lights.

As long as the socket and wiring is rated for it you'll have no problem. Otherwise you'll prematurely kill the socket or melt the wires. Also the flash unit must be able to handle the increased output. (y)
