Replacing Weather Seal On 24-105L

In an act of clumsiness I've somehow managed to snick a piece out of the weather seal, (the seal that fits up against the camera body), on my Canon 24-105L lens. :( Not sure how and when I've done it but there's now a bit missing, so it's no longer weather sealed.

Anyone have any idea on a cost to replace this seal? I'll probably take it to Lehmanns as they aren't too far from me but they are shut 'till next week. just curious what the charge may be.

Depends whether you want cheap and efficient DIY or expensive and thorough work done by a professional.

DIY method:

Removing the 4 screws from the top face where the mount is allows you to lift the mount (gently). It's attached with a ribbon cable that allows the contacts on the surface to talk to the internal electronics.

Rubber seals can be ordered from Canon directly on 0208 731 4100, they cost about £18 delivered (extortionate I know!).

The rubber seal just slips over the top over the mount and the screws tightened again.

If you're confident that you're not going to drop it or make any major boo-boos then it's actually very very simple.

Do you think you could add a weather seal to other non seal L lenses? I realise this would only add a little extra protection to a non sealed lens like the non I.s 70-200 2.8 but wondered if it's possible.
 
I'd have thought that the L lenses are engineered with a small gap where the rubber seal sits (it's only about 3 mm wide) but other lenses might not allow for it.

I'll see if I've still got that old weather seal and I could post it out to you? It's not in great condition but if it works you could get a new one.

Thanks Dave. I admit I did look at the lens and wonder if I could do it myself. I think I'll get in touch with a repairer when they reopen and see what they will charge. If it's only a few quid then I let them do the work. If it's silly money then I might have a go myself. :suspect:

Erm, just found a weather seal for a Canon L lens. Does have a couple of nicks taken out of the 'skirt' area but works perfectly well.

Anyone who wants it just give me a shout.
