Hey

I have a Canon 5d Mark II and a couple of lenses. Because he is impressed by this my friend is thinking of buying one now for portraits and stills. When the Mark III comes out, whether it is later this year or early next year, will he lose money by selling the Mark II to fund the purchase of the new one, or is it worth waiting until the Mark III comes out? Doesn’t want to be paying so much money for a camera and then the newer one comes out and he loses a shedload because it has plummeted in price….

What’s the resale value like on cameras, esp with low actuations?

They hold their value pretty well. I would suspect the mkIII will be considerably more expensive than the mkII, which is by all account a fantastic camera. With tech products there's always something newer around the corner.

Is it worth waiting until the III comes out then do you think to take advantage of the drop in MkII proices?

As no-one, apart from select people at Canon who are sworn to secrecy, knows anything about the 5D3 in terms of what, when or how much, its an impossible question to answer.

All I can say is that waiting for it to come out means he is missing a lot of shots he could be taking with it...

Very good point. Is there not even a guess on a year quarter based on the life cycle of say the 5D MkI?

The original 5D was released in August 05 and the MkII in November 08....3 years and 3 months. There's nothing set in stone to say that any future update will have the same time frame.

For a long time the 5D was somewhat unique in being an affordable FF camera. Now there is competition with other manufacturers, so I would put money on a more regular update.

I would think possibly Feb 2011 as a possible launch date.

that is very close ;)

But when it does arrive, they'll be at full retail price then and I would guess more expensive than the 5D II is now, so could be a few months before they drop down and settle in price - not sure if they would come down to a 5d II price now though ?

Personally, I'd be buying one shortly and then poss look to upgrade if the mark III offers him more

After a quick Google, the guestimates on the 5dmk3 seem to be Autumn 2011! A long time to wait!!

IMO, get the Mk II now and wait until the Mk IV comes out before any upgrade. Of course, he COULD wait for the Mk III to bring Mk II prices down but there's no real way of knowing for sure when the Mk III will appear and there's a whole summer of shooting he could miss out on.

^that. If he really wants to save a little then mk1 from ebay may be the way.
It would only take to sell a few large prints to cover the upgrade to cost to mk3. Given Canon is actively releasing functional updates to mk2 I suspect it will stay on for a while.
