hopefully someone with more technical knowledge than me will come along and answer, however.

Looking at the shots taken wide open with shallow dof it looks as if it's backfocussing, i.e. focussing further away from the point at which you're trying to focus. On the D300 there is a setting which will compensate for this, alternatively if your camera doesn't have this facility the only way AFAIK is to send it away for cal.

Just so you know, this lens is capable of stunning sharp contrasty shots, mine is excellent so it's worth persevering.
