Rode video mic or something else?

Need a microphone to use with my videos on a D7000 and the Rode seems to be a good place to start? Any alternatives any good? Just a budget version will do as its just to play around with.

And if anyone's got one they don't need give me a shout! :wave:
 
what are you filming? There is no 'one thing fits all' solution for audio.
 
I use a Rode on my D7000 and it works great, also use an extension cable to get it off camera if needed.

to be honest its just general use - i feel like playing around with the video capabilities on the D7000 and the internal mic can pick up a lot of background noise - I guess its mostly filming people talking in front of the camera etc.

I think you will get better results with a lav to be fair in that situation. The rode is good for picking up general sounds but its still going to pickup background noise when filming from a distance
