hi
hope this is in the correct place.

I'm off to Rome in July and it will be the first time I have used a dslr insted of a compact on holiday.

I'm ok with the weight as my D3100 is not to heavy but I prefer to take just one lens if possible. I have the 18-55mm kit lens and the af-s 35mm f/1.8g. I really just take pictures of anything I can and usually get a few good keepsakes. Besides as I improve I can always go back.

Which lens would you take out of the two or should I try and get a better one. Could I pick up a better lens that would work with my D3100, second hand maybe. Any advice please

regards
Rick

Your kit lens would be absolutely fine. It covers virtually any focal length you are likely to need for casual use and is plenty fast enough in the lovely clear light in Rome.

On the other hand, the 35 will bag you some of those shots you see straight out of magazines, due to it sharp rendering, nice bokeh and shallow depth of field.... both lenses together weigh less than the 24-70 or similar that others might take, why limit yourself? in fact, if it were me I'd just take the 35... Hehehe, choices...

The 35mm is nice, and I can quite happily spend an afternoon or a weekend with it as I spent years with nothing but the standard lens in the years before digital.

However, on holiday where I want scenery in the shots, I'd want something wider (and let's be honest, when you're used to having 18mm or 28mmFF available, it's very easy to miss it).

Nikon's 18-55mm is a corker, considering how cheaply made it is.

Thanks guys
I've sorted out my insurance so I can take both lenses with me now.
