rubber hood

I personally prefer metal ones as they ofer more protection, but rubber ones can be handy when photographing through glass.

I don't have any metal hoods, all mine are plastic. Could you link to one that you have?

Hi Steven

I use rubber hoods on all my lenses from 17 to 300mm focal length.

As K4stn mentioned, they fold flat, which means it’s easy to pack the lens/camera away without having to take the hood off and, of course, when you want to use it again, you don’t have to put it back on.

My other reason for using them is that they stay in place when dashing around with the camera over your shoulder. I have never lost a rubber hood due to knocks or vigorous activity, but I have lost a few bayonet type petal hoods that way.

Hi. My take on this is with a hard plastic "or metal"? hood a knock is transmitted to the lens. A rubber hood will absorb minor knocks.
I use rubber hoods whenever I can.
