Ryanair friendly bag needed...

Hi all,

My lovely wife and I are going on hols via Ryanair in September. My G1 has already outgrown the Panny system case that I bought so I am on the lookout for a bigger bag that is cabin baggage friendly.

max external dimensions = 55 x 40 x 20 cm

must hold the following :
Panasonic G1 body, 14-45mm, 45-200mm and 20mm lenses
Flashgun (Metz AF36) & spare batteries
Optech strap
Mains charger & spare camera battery
UV & CPL filters
camera manual
Giottos super rocket blower
lens cloths & microfibre cloths

+ passports, keys, mobile etc.


I like the look of the Redsnapper Duo, but it appears to have open front pockets rather than zipped pockets.

Any suggestions ?

[I want a shoulder bag, not a rucksack style bag.]

Well I have been looking for a new bag to store my 20D, 550D, flash, couple of lens, filters batteries etc.
I was looking at Tamrac 11 or Lowepro 400, but looking at the Red Snaper gear it looks much better value for money.
It is very difficult when most shops do not stock much of a range, trying to work out if it is suitable on-line is hard.
I will keep an eye out here for peoples comments.
 
I was always under the impression that Ryanair went by weight and Easyjet went by size...maybe Im wrong.

Easyjet were always brilliant to take camera gear on board because it weighed tons but as long as the bag fitted their size board slot, you were ok.
 
Ryanair go on size and weight. You can be lucky and get through no problem or unlucky and get onboard wearing everything you have for a 2 week trip. No restriction on weight you wear but if it's in a bag it's too heavy:cuckoo:

However back to the OP. The redsnapper front pockets are indeed open, the top of the bag folds over and covers them and clips into place. For things to fall out of them you would have to give it a serious shake (and chances are you won't be doing that)
There are two end pockets which are the same sort of size and are velcroed closed. And also a mesh zipped pocket in the foldover top part.
For more secure storage you could use the laptop sleeve which velcroes into the inside.
The bag I received is much lighter in colour than the one shown on the website. Doesn't shout camera gear to passers by. And was excellent value for money.
That's my tuppence worth

Brilliant - that was the endorsement I was looking for.

Yep - Ryanair 50x40x20cm and 10kg max for hand luggage, 15kg (!!!) for checked luggage. No limit on how much the passengers should weigh; surely luggage weight should be inversely proportional to passenger weight ?

Have you had a look at JMerson's review? I discovered it after I had bought the bag. Gives good info and more detailed pics.
Then you can blame him if you don't like it.
 
I flew with Ryanair a few times last year. I used the Lowepro slingshot 300AW.
It's dimensions are, I believe, ever so slightly over but it fits into the test cage with ease.
Ryanair are notorious for charging excess weight or size but I have never had a problem.

As for my wife and her suitcase, well...........:shake:

"Ryanair" and "friendly". Not often you hear/read those two words in the same sentence!
 
Don't worry about the dimensions too much. I had a bag that was both slightly too large and too heavy and everyone was happy with it. They will only pull you over if it is obviously over the limit.
GEM SLR backpack does work, and it fits 15" laptop + loads of lenses. I am not sure if you need a bit more generic one. Maybe Lowepro Compudaypack is more like it.
 
The Redsnapper is the one for me :D

I will pack my smaller DSLR bag in my suitcase for 'days out' once we're there, but need something big enough to get everything in my hand luggage.
