I have searched and searched this forum ('MK III, search term too short'. Really useful! ), but can't find the answer to this question: secondhand 1Ds Mk III ~V~ new 1D MkIV.

As they are roughly the same price, which would be better: a s/hand MK III or a new MK IV? (or have I got my research totally wrong?)

(to be used for events (not weddings), people, landscapes, wildlife).

Thanks!

Kind of depends. I had a 1DsII and was going to get a 1DsIII but now have a 1DIV instead. My reasons were:

  • 16Mpx feels like "enough" to me
  • 10fps can be useful occaisionally
  • 45 addressable AF points not 19
  • Ability to do video
  • Ability to support faster UDMA cards and have a deeper buffer
  • Higher pixel density can be useful for small birds

Downsides were:

  • Crop factor a pain for landscapes - need a wider lens
  • Nobody makes a "standard" zoom that feels right on a 1.3 crop

Plus Sue has the 1DsII, so it's not like you can't get to use one! :D

How are you finding the mk4? thinking of selling my 1ds3 and buying a 5d2 and a 1d4.

Only tried it on one day out and it seems ok. Will know more in a week or so as I am giving it a workout. Currently have 1d4 and 7d which are a good pairing. Although I can see the appeal of a 5DII as well.

Well I dont use FF a great deal so a 5d would be ok.where did you get the mk4.

for 'standard' lenses on a 1.3 the 24-70 is/was my main worker as it's 35-90 equiv, the 17-40 is a little wider and without the length ( about 22-50mm equiv) but still a decent one to use. Yes you sacrifice the length but have got the speed.

Another consideration here is that a near mint 1Ds III would still be around £1000 less than a new 1D IV at current prices.

That's my point. There are options but non are "right" as a single lens solution. 24-70 is great on FF. What I've actually settled on in 17-55 (27-88 equiv) on my 7D.

Thanks for the replies.

I *think* we are going to go for a good secondhand 1Ds MkIII. Anyone know a good one for sale? (I'm in Cumbria).

Thanks.

Thanks.

Actually, another question: how do these two cameras stack up in low light? Am I right in saying the 1Ds goes to 3200 on the ISO, but the MK IV goes to 102,000? Quite a difference!

The 1DIV will be better in low light, and faster in operation (focus, fps) especially when used with 2.8 lenses. High ISO blitzes the 1DIII (which I think is meant to be better than the 1DsIII in that respect).

I was shooting a play the other night at ISO12800 on the 1DIV and the shots are very usable, whereas my 1DIII was getting quite nasty at ISO3200 in the same situation.

This has always been a doubt between Canon users.

1Ds vs 1D mark II
1Ds Mark II vs 1D Mark III
1Ds Mark III vs 1D Mark IV

I think the answer is very simple, it depends on what you like to shoot. A Canon 1Ds from a previous generation, will always have better image quality than a 1D of the next generation, but you loose the speed.
For the style of photography I like to do the most, I can't live without full-frame, but different people have different needs.
