Same subject different crop

Hi can you please give me some feedback on these photographs I have converted them to black and white and I would like to know if I have done it correctly or do I need to go back to the drawing board?

I prefer both the conversion to B&W and the composition in the first one.

The tones in the first are, I think, much better than the second, which is too dark.

While the water in the second follows the road well, I think there is too much space in the left of the shot.

The road in the first is more dominant and I think it leads the eye well into the photo.

Initially I thought the gate to the right of the tree was distracting but, it and the fence point to the tree.

I think just a slight increase in contrast would help, but that is just how I see it; its a good shot.
