I like the portrait, but can't help but think that it'd be better without her hair across her face, I find it a little distracting.

Yes a little bigger would be nicer, I actually like the hair it makes your eyes wander around her face, a very pensive shot. Good work.

the new largest size that you're allowed is 1000 pixels on the widest edge

Up until very recently it was 800px on the longest side of the image.
The size has now been upped to 1024px on the longest side (but a lot of peeps still find 800px the most comfortable viewing).

There is no set filesize if the image is hosted offsite.
However if you use your free TPF gallery space, then its a maximum of 200kb filesize.

is 1500px... needs to be 1024 on the widest side, i.e. in this case, the height

I do prefer the bigger version though, and the hair looks fine to me now
