Sandisk Extreme vs Sandisk Extreme III Or Other Brands?

I'm looking to purchase more Sandisk Compact Flash cards. I currently use /have a number of Sandisk Extreme IIIs 30mb/s cards. Which seem to be like gold dust now... :thinking: Have they been discontinued? :razz:

Looking at Sandisk "Extreme" are they as good as the Extreme IIIs? - I'm not really fussed about fast data rates but since getting used to 30mb/s I'd like to stick to that speed.

Are there any other brands recommended by users of TP? I'm partial to looking at other brands too.

I don't like "cheaping" out on memory as I'd like it to be reliable!

Any recommendations appreciated..

Extreme IIIs do still exist but in the form of Sandisk 'Ultra' now....same speed

new Extremes are 60mb/s and Extreme Pro's are 90 mb/s - never had any problems with my Ultras or Extremes, very reliable. Hardly any experience of other brands.

Thanks Welshwizard - I'll check out the Ultras and well as the new Extremes.

£23 sounds a bargain for 8gb :) - They seem to have rocketed since the last batch I picked up!

This got me thinking - is there any real evidence (as opposed to hearsay and uncorroborated anecdotal evidence) that demonstrates that some brands of CF card are more reliable than others? I'm not talking about shoddy fakes with inferior production/components, but about major established brands. Sandisk and Lexar often get cited as being the only viable choice if reliability is important but yet I still hear stories of data problems with those brands. Are they proven to be more reliable than , say, Kingston or Transcend (which, btw, I use and have never had an issue with).

I heard somewhere (might have been on TP) that some card-readers can corrupt cards - maybe a significant number of reported reliability issues have a root cause in other equipment/usage-regime issues rather than in the card itself?
