Helping out at the School fundraising event, we have a santa booked and plan to take pictures of the kids with santa.
I currently have a 430ex flash on a canon 30d, and was planning to hire a 580ex to give me some additional light and have the 430 as a slave. the school cloakroom will be set-up as santa's grotto, and i'm just wondering if this would be adequate.
Was thinking whether any reflectors or hanging a sheet in the background would be worthwhile.
Idea is to print direct so no time to edit. but I can get in beforehand to get set-up properly

Any advice welcome

I would definitely make sure that the background is either festive (xmas tree etc) or plain. No one will want coats and coat hooks in the background.

I'd take a noisy cuddly toy or something to get the kids to look in your direction (or ask them to look at santa.

Have fun!

Thanks, ye, i have a canon 85mm f1.8, which i think would be good, but not sure if i have enough room. I have the 18-55 kit lens, the other consideration is getting the 50mm. I have found (i think) a source in glasgow to hire the flash from so i could see about a lens too.

regarding the soft box with the 430, how do they connect to the flash, do they need to be mounted on a stand/ tripod?

Thanks

the ones flash in the pan sells are for speedlights, I'd put them on konig light stands from 7 day shop

85 might be a bit long in your room, unless you want to shoot v tight. But with a darkish room and low flash power you should get a nice shallow DoF

I'd agree that 85mm sounds too long. Nifty 50 sounds more like the weapon of choice. However, if you get the lighting right, the kit 18-55 would do a fair old job.

Whatever you use, good luck with it. I'm sure the parents / kids will be chuffed!
