SD card not clicking into slot

After my wife took my SD card from the laptop after I'd been viewing some photos and then put it back into my Canon 500D the card won't click into place in the slot. I now have to close the cover as a way to push the card into place. She hasn't performed the procedure on my camera before and says that the card just wouldn't click into place, so she simply closed the cover and left it.

Has anyone discovered anything similar happen to their card slot? We have similar click-in slots on compact cameras and mobile phones, so it's not as if she wasn't familiar with it - so I don't think she's done anything wrong in this instance.

Can anyone shed any light on the problem?

I've had a card fall apart, maybe check the fingers at the contact end of the card to make sure the plastic isn't broken stopping the card going all the way in
:)

Rob,

I think you may well have solved my problem. I just had a closer look at the card and noticed a small hair line crack on the bottom corner. I was able to wiggle it about with my finger and it broke off eventually. The whole bottom edge where there contacts are seems a bit flimsy as a result, so I think I'd better get a new card. I owe you a pint, my friend!

Got any recommendations for alternative cards - 8GB or larger? It's one thing I have never taken the time to study in any depth.

I use 2x 4GB cards, keep one in the camera, the other in the bag as a back up

8GB cards are good though, I would get 2 just to be safe.

This is what was left of the card that fell apart

The bottom corner has broken off mine, just like what seems to have happened in yours. The crack wasn't very visible though without a closer inspection. I was more worried that the card slot was damaged than I am about the card.

Thanks for your input - much appreciated!!

UPDATE: I bought a new card yesterday and it still won't click into place. I compared the slot with a friend's Canon compact and, whilst I don't expect them to be identical, there appears to a small brass strip of metal fattened along the bottom of the slot - like it should have been along the side but the was bent back by the bottom of the card. I can't be sure, but that's how it appears. I'm now stuck with the dilemma of whether to start fiddling with it of leave it alone as the camera still works fine with the card held in place by the cover. I'm not sure that I'd be bothered about paying for it to be fixed but also am keen to leave well alone.

Any views?
