Afternoon Peeps.

So after a card nearly failing at a wedding I bought a new one and wanted to test the speed to see if its a keeper.

Is there a good program to use?

Will my SD card reader be a factor for write speed?

Am i best just loading it in the camera and putting in H speed and shoot?

The card is advertised at "upto" 40mb write and 90 mb read.

Thanks installed and it cant even see the card lol.

Might be this windows 8.1 pffft.

yes the card will be a factor
I 'invested' in a USB 3 reader from Lexar. CF and SD only. lovely and quick.
I always format my card, before a shoot/gig/event in the camera.

The read/write speed of the card will depend on which model of camera you use it on and also how big the buffer size is too - especially if you are doing burst shooting.

The size of the buffer matters little, it's just that - a buffer. You still have to 'empty' the buffer onto the card. So, apart from the bus/processing speed, the card itself is the remaining limiting factor - just the same as a hard disk/SSD in a PC.
 
Thanks its for a 70D.

Have just tried it on works 550D and it seemed to shoot a fair few on burst and it didnt see, to slow down.

UPS drop'd off my 70D today and one of the first things I checked was buffer clearing speed and size.

With a Amazon basics 16g class 10 I got 15 raws before the slow down and it took 22.3 sec to clear the buffer.

With the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MBS I got 18 raws before the slow down and 9.2 sec to clear. The 18 is 2 more then Canon states for the 70D with a 8g UHS1 card. It looks like the extra speed of the Pro does help with two more frames, also the UHS1 card they used must be the 45 MBS version.

For the test my file size was 24.2 MB, Canons test file size is 24.0 MB. Not as big or as fast as my 7D but more then good enough for my backup body

Its not bad for the price, but quite a few reviews are saying that the card failed almost straight away - however it doesn't specify exactly which ones they purchased.

I would send yours back personally and get a replacement or refund.

However, any SD card can fail - even branded expenses ones. (although some might be better tested then others?)
 
Thanks just tested it in camera.

60 full size jpegs before slow down
15 raw before slow down
11 raw plus large jpegs

That's good enough for me I think

But that's a test of the amount of RAM in the camera buffer. The real question is how long did it take to shift the contents of the buffer onto card.
 
Yes correct good point oops lol I can't be bothered to return it so I'll keep it and see how I get on in real life use. I rarely need high speed tbh I was just curious.
