Hi Guys,

I've developed my own website but not now sure how to get up near the top on Google without some investment etc. Just wondered how everyone else does it?

Another vote for the Google SEO pfd, Photoshelter also do a good one, aimed mainly at photogs.

It also takes time. You should see your site improve over time depending on content and other factors. Worth reading up on.

Get other people talking about your website. Comment on other photography blogs with thoughtful stuff and they'll link to you, maybe comment on yours. It's all really an issue of online presence; the more of a presence you have online (i.e. the more you are mentioned) the higher you rank.

One commonly overlooked tip that is especially prevalent with photography sites is to ensure that your site has rich text content. It's one thing to get eventually linked to your site but once google is then enumerating through the pages of your site it needs an 'anchor' to determine your rankings. For this is uses 'keywords' and the more text content you have, the more chance your site will display in the ranking lists when people are looking for particular content.

Take a look at your photography and where you are going with it, or the types of pictures you take and write a few paragraphs and somehow get it down on that page.

Seriously, it will make all the difference to your search rankings.

Google crawls using keywords in the content as opposed to meta tags.

Basically you need to make sure your website is semantic

Make sure you havent used tables to layout the content and have used heading and paragraph tags for the text.

Google will crawl the site in its own time so make sure you have good relevant keywords in the text :)
