Sell 24-105 towards 24-70 or keep it?

Hi all - just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the following...

I got a 24-105 with my 6D but my goal in early 2014 would be a 24-70 2.8 II. I already have a 70-200 F4L.

I appreciate the 24-105 has some flaws but it ain't a bad lens.

Considering I've 24-200 covered in either scenario, would you sell the 24-105 to pay towards the hefty enough priced 24-70 or keep it for the occasions you'd like some more reach but not to stand out too much due to the colour/length of the 70-200?

I sold my 24-105 to help fund my 24-70, and can quite easily live without it. I can't say I've missed it other than when shooting video hand held.
Saying that, I have also been borrowing a mates 24-105 to go with my 650D, and did find me using it on my 5DMKIII more than I imagined, and for the reasons you have mentioned.
It's lighter, which is great for taking to work, covers a nicer range, has IS and really isn't that bad as far as IQ goes. In fact I'd be happy with that lens most of the time, but I do have the 24-70 f/2.8II and love it to bits, so that's not going anywhere.

For what it's worth my thoughts are keep the 24-105 for a while, if you can. Considering the low price of a new 24-105 it might be worth keeping anyway, if you can afford to.
 
I went the other way recently and traded in a Sigma 24-70 (and another lens) against a Nikkor 24-120 VR. No need for both and since I very rarely went down to f/2.8, don't miss that extra stop of light (and I'm not a fan of ultra shallow DoF). The VR and the high ISO performance of my current bodies more than compensate for the slight drop in speed.
 
If you can afford to keep the 24-105 and still buy the 24-70, then do so - this is what I would do, give it 6 months or so after you've bought the 24-70, if you've not touched the 24-105, then sell it on, if you have used it, then keep it and enjoy it for those times wham it's required...

Andy - that would be best I suppose, I'm getting married in 7 weeks so I can't afford anymore exotic glass until Jan/Feb so the small bit of saving I may be able to do between now and then means I could probably keep the 24-105 I just am craving the sharpness I had become used to with the Sigma 18-35 1.8!

I had the 24-105 before I bought the 24-70. If I'm out and about then I take the 24-105 as generally there is enough light, but indoors its the 24-70. The weight of the 24-70 is a factor, but where light is scarce it has to be taken as that stop can mean keeping the ISO down; I don't see any staggering difference in sharpness.
The lens I do take when shooting indoors is oddly enough an 85 1.8, I nearly sold it, but so glad I didn't, its light fast and a pleasure to have.
 
I'd vote for keeping it too. I have both the 24-70 mk1 and the 34-105. I've never felt the need for the mkII - which is a technical masterpiece of course - over the mk1. I use my 24-105 for a walkaround lens. Much easier to carry around and IQ is pretty good. The faster lens gets used for portraiture and studio. I'd never consider using it for anything else that I do when the f4 lens pays it's way.

Not sure how the 24-105 is nowhere near as sharp as the 24-70. Must be poor copies of the 24-105 going around. I could post shots taken with either and no one would be able to tell the difference just by looking at them. This is without analysing them of course, and as well all know, that's just something owners do, and no one else rally cares when looking at a shot.
The 24-105 definitely has it's plus points, especially for video.

People get so wrapped up in having to have the best that suddenly anything that isn't stops working properly ;-)
