Hi,

Am sending my 100-400 back to canon for it to be looked at (I suspect the friction ring cardboard is iffy) and I'm in a minor quandry about how to pack the lens....

Anyway - just wondering what I should include in the (well padded) box along with the lens?

Should I put the lens in it's case?? I obviously put the service request form in there - should I be including anything else?

surely all they 'need' is the lens?
if you include anything else, tick that box on the service form.
Mine is due to be delivered back to me any second now (according to the tracking number :) )

FWIW, I hand delivered mine (but having it sent back), but left all caps on, the tripod ring and the case, I only left the hood at home.
If it turns up with no case, I'll be having words!!
 
Ok, just got mine back, all bits were still attached to it and it looks very clean :D
I can't test it's functionality because I don't have my camera here - but the invoice only says:
General Cleaning
Cleaning: Body (parts)
Cleaning Lens system

I'm hoping the latter will have an effect, as I was also expecting (hoping) some form of performance test result or calibration results?
 
What did you have yours in for?
 
I felt it was just a touch soft at full length, which is something I don't recall noticing before.
It might have just been that I'm stretching the lens more than I used to, but with an impending safari trip in a weeks time, I thought I'd send it in anyway.
 
Makes sense - would have done the same.

How long did it take and cost if you don't mind me asking?
 
it's a fixed menu £60 for clean & repair, they quote leave 10 working days.
I took it in there on Tuesday and said it must be back by the 25th at the absolute latest, they phoned me yesterday to say it was done!!! so I asked them to post it back to me (as traffic was murder), and it turned up today.
if you need an AF overhaul thats another £30 on top.
 
Mine went into Canon at Elstree last year for friction ring repair and calibration. I was told they could repair the ring alone on a time and materials basis for ~£60 (unless they found something more serious) and another £35 for calibration, or pay a fixed repair cost of £127 all in and with a six month warranty on the entire lens, not just the repair. I went for the full £127 deal. I've had the lens back for several months and I've never been happier with it. It' 3.5 years old and as good as new.

Just send in end caps for protection. They won't need hood, tripod collar, case etc..
 
Do you know hadn't even thought to take the tripod ring off. That would have been unnecessary weight!! Thanks!!
 
If you have a protective/UV filter then remove that too, then never put it on again. :)
