Sharp copy?

Hi all,

Obviously knowing if you have a sharp copy of a lens is some what relative.

I realise that the comparison should really be carried out under the same test conditions, but could someone please give a rough idea if the pictures below represent a "sharp" copy or not?

1/25th @ f4, 25mm, ISO 200 and no PP. Focus point was just above the "mm":

It does look OK but that box is not a great test. The print on there is not going to be all that sharp when looked at close up and there is little texture on the box itself to show up.

If you really want to see what the lens is doing try some fabric where there is lots of lovely detail to see close up.

I suspect you'd be pretty pleased. Especially as you seem to have the first 17-40 IS. ;)

"Sharp" - from a Canon!

Yes you're right it is all relative:LOL::LOL::LOL:

All of my Nikon lenses are so 'Sharp' I can take a landscape of a forest, crop down to the head of an ant sat on a tree 50 yards away, and you'd still think I'd used a Macro lens

Now that's SHARP

My 70-200 f2.8 is so sharp I use it as a razor when I'm camping, and so tough I chop kindle with it for the fire

Honest :D

Pin a sheet of newsprint to the wall and using a tripod take a shot of it square on so the frame is filled with text etc on the sheet. Then you can compare edge to middle sharpness.

Or you could just accept the picture above looks quite good and just get on with using it ;)

Damn you "copy & paste"!

Thanks for the input peeps. I'm going to have a bit more of a play with a tripod or some decent lighting. Being "Mr shakey hands" really doesn't help either :(

... and to think... I bought a load of studio flash equipment from this chap last week... what have I done...:LOL:

just wanted to comment...

The test you've conducted is an interesting measure of dof for your lens at that aperture and focal length.

The crop seems to shows how quickly the sharpness drops off as you compare the center/right side of the crop to the left side, even if the difference in depth is probably only a few millimeters.

Might be handy for you to know the sharpness/dof characteristics of your lens, particularly if you'd be interested in hyperfocussing performance.

See I told you that old Nikon glass would come in handy for something DD:LOL:;)
