Is this a bad idea ? I have a Sony a700 and I have no idea how waterproof it is, if at all.

I'd like to try to do some long exposure shots, but I'm presuming this is a bad idea if it's actually snowing.

Seems obvious really, but I thought I'd ask :)

Get a rain cover or just use a plastic bag to keep the camera dry. Just stick the lens out of the bag. I use the cheap shower caps to cover my camera in bad weather, then just uncover the lens to take a shot.

freezer bags can be a cheap temporary solution..

I just lay my woolly hat on the camera, a friend has a woolly neck warmer thing that works even better, i find bags trap moisture where as wool absorbs it away from the camera.

Another for the freezer bag! :plusone:
Never used anything else.
Keep the freezer bags in the bag with the camera and it will always be the same temperature as the camera, no condensation probs!!

When i did mine the other night i had an umbrella and a tea towel draped over the body and lens.

A rain cover is still on the shopping list.

Just don't be a big girl and just shoot... it will be fine! :D

Its not like you are dunking it in a bucket of water!!

If you have an old waterproof jacket, you can cut the arm up and use that. Its what I have done for my telephoto and it works a charm or there is the plastic bag.

lol tell that to my 20D that after a good P'ing on gave me a few ERR99 and misfires..

Oh yes, I forgot to add "its not like you are putting it in the urinal and peeing on it" :D

I did several long exposures the other night in snowfall and didn't take any precautions. The camera didn't complain once - just a wipe with a cloth afterwards to get the spots off and go again.
