Short Lens for £150 odd ? ( portraiture, landscapes , events etc ) )

Hi everyone.

Christmas time is just around the corner, and being a young guy ( 17 ) i need to ask Santa for a new present!

I've just got back into photography 6 months or so ago, and acquired a 20D with Kit Lens, and i got a 55-250mm IS. ( think it's great! )


I can't afford to start investing £600 odd on lens upgrades so i'm looking to get a shorter lens but hopefully for around £150 odd ( so just a shorter one to start me off with portraiture, landscapes etc ) as 55-250mm can be a bit too restrictive.

I also do alot of motorsport so perhaps the shorter lens would be of some use for that too ( ie closer up shots , different angles etc )

I'm hoping someone knows of a shorter lens out there that's as much of a bargain as the 55-250 IS :thinking:

Any ideas?

I'd second that. You'll not go wrong with the 50mm...great (and cheap) intro for portrait use. You won't be disappointed
 
Just chiming in with a thirding! That's the first lens that sprang to mind for me too! You should be able to pick up one of the ef-s 18-55mm lenses cheap enough too. It's nothing special by any means, but it should give you cheap access to all those wider focal lengths you are missing. Both of these lenses should be had together for round about the 150 mark.
 
BUT, you already have 50mm covered and if you want something wider then, as good as it is, the 50mm f/1.8 isn't going to help.

For me, the obvious solution is the 18-55 IS kit lens, or maybe a Sigma 17-70.

ALready have the 18-55 kit as i said originally :)

In which case the nifty fifty is a great lens but for me, on a crop body a 30 or 35mm prime is a much better length.
 
Or, for the really dramatic perspective close ups a 10-22mm or similar UWA would be great (but not in your budget).
 
The 18-55 Kit lens is the ideal reach that i'm after.

I'm just wondering if there's anything of better quality out there around the 150 mark ...?
 
At that price, you get either flexibility or speed - they don't really come together unfortunately.
 
+1 for the Tamron 17-50, I got mine for £180ish on here. It's light, sharp, relatively well built for it's price and a total bargain. You wouldn't regret it - with only one other lens I don't think a 50/1.8 is going to offer flexibility except in low light situations.
 
A used Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is above your budget, but I'd recommend it.
