*Most* old Sigmas (pre 1990s) were pretty crap. I'd avoid.

Just ran across this thread and wanted to give my perspective.
I have this lens, even though I haven't used the lens in awhile since I replaced it with a Sigma 70-300mm HSM. But I bought it at a garage sale a couple years back. It's served me well. You just have to focus carefully. I mainly use it outdoors during the day so that I can keep a fast shutter speed, and thus be able to keep it handheld. If I remember right, you can't use it on the newer digital cameras unless you're in fully manual mode. But this is pretty common for a lot of the older lenses when trying to use them on newer cameras.
Photos come out sharp, colors are great, and it's a pretty useful zoom range. But zoom lenses have also come down in price, so I'd recommend passing on this one unless it's just too good of a deal to pass up. You can get an automatic lens with an even better range for just over $100.
That being said, this lens was useful on many occasions (especially outdoors on sunny days), and taught me a lot about photography since I was forced to go full manual.
