OK... a slightly different twist on the usual "which one of these lenses" posts. I currently have a 12-24 Sigma for my 5D2. It's totally amazing in the perspective that it gives, but lets down somewhat in the contrast and clarity - even when stopped down. To be truthful, I tend to use it at 12mm to get everything in architecturally, but it doesn't (or more probably I don't) quite deliver as a landscape lens
I'm off for a roadtrip around Arizona/California in August and I'm thinking of augmenting the 12-24 with a 17-40L and we're going to go around all the amazing canyons/places there (we're both into 'togging). I'm not interested in spending 16-35LII money on an overlapping lens, but what are the opinions of those who have/do owned the two - do they complement each other or would I be wasting my money on getting the 17-40 (next lens up is a 24-105)? I'm not worried about the cost, more the quality of the photos as I'm hoping to get some good landscape style shots whilst over there and it's a once in a lifetime trip...
