I've been planning on getting a Canon 70-200L IS F4 and and a 1x4 converter.
It's probably too much to expect the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS to produce photos at the same level of IQ that the Canon produces but has anyone used both lenses and have any comparison shots?

So far, most of the shots I've seen on flickr taken with the Sigma appear to be a little shoft.
I really like my Canon 24-105 and I don't want to compromise image IQ with a longer reach lens.

do you mean 70-200 f4 IS? I've used it with a 1.4x convertor and it works quite well. Takes it down to a f5.6 lens but the AF still works and I achieved acceptable results with it maxed out at 280mm.

Oops, yes I do mean the 70-200
I doubt doubt the combination of this lens with the 1.4x converter, I've seen lots of good photos take with these.

Although not exactly the same lens, I have a Sigma 150-500mm F5.6 which is great on wildlife on bright days but nowhere near as good as my Canon 70-200mm F2.8 even with a 1.4x Sigma TC on (which reduces it down to F4). The price reflects this though.
If you have the 24-105mm F4 IS lens you'll be happier with the Canon 70-200 F4 IMO.

That's good enough for me then, I'll stay with the idea of the 70-200L F4 IS.
I've had enough buying and selling lenses and I am quite sure the investment will be worth it.

You certainly won't be disappointed, although I had the dilemma of F4 or F2.8 and IS or non IS!! :bonk:

I bit the bullet and pushed the boat out for the 2.8 IS as I can then use the TC and still have a constant F4.

Thanks Paul, which Canon body are you using?
The shots from your Sigma are far better than I expected but then it is the 500mm version not the 400mm.

For the cost i was very surprised - There from a 5DMKII - This is @ 500mm (big crop)
