Been debating for a while whether I should get one of these for a bit of extra reach over my 100-400 L with my 5D2. Well, I had a look at the bank balance and surprized myself with how much was in there (pleasant surprize for a change).
So the wife and I decided to have a shot at the New Year sales, she got a nice new set of cutlery and a new Dyson and I got the 150-500 that I've had my eye on for a while. Wont get it til probably next week with holidays etc but I can't wait to try it.

Congrats on your new purchases. Nice to have pleasant surprise for a change when looking at the bank balance
 
Sorry to say but I think you've wasted your money, there is now way in hell the glass is as good as the 100-400L and the extra 100mm isn't really much in the grand scheme of things.

I think you'll get better results from the 100-400 and cropping than you will from the 150-500.
 
The 150-500 isn't that bad a lens, and I've got some great shots with mine, as have others. However I fear you may be dissapointed as the extra 100mm reach may not be quite as much as you imagine.

I've owned a 150-500 and ultimately sold it as my Nikon 70-300VR + cropping gave comparable results without the masses of extra weight and size. I fear that when compared to L-Glass @ 400mm it will fall somewhat short...

Every bit helps but on the tele end after 400mm the gains get very expensive. Cheaper to buy a 7D than to go 400->600 in glass :D

At the other end, even 1mm on the wide end makes a big difference.

I have both (the 150-500 on my Pentax) and I agree.
 
It's not going to replace the 100-400 L, thats going to be on the 7D while the 150-500 will be going on the 5D2. I'll more than likely be using the 5D2 for long static shots while the 7D will be used for the moving shots. My next longest lens is the 70-200 and it's just long enough for either of the shots I want so it saves having to change lenses and miss a shot. If I really need the distace I'll just reverse the lenses and get the 500 onto the 7D for an 800 equivalent.

Well, I've got the lens today, 6th January and had a bit of a play around with it. Light outside was terrible, very dull (and cold too) and so I gave in and went inside to continue. I set up a tube from a pringles pack so the text on the back of it was facing me, got as far away from it as possible (about 15ft) and took a few shots. Considering I was indoors, very poor light, handheld with no flash just to test it, I got some great IQ shots, I could read it easier on the camera than I could on the tube. So far so (very) good!
