Sigma 24-70

I have had some great results with mine, only thing that lets it's down is the 82mm thread size if using on a FF camera. When I use it on my cropped camera I use a step down ring to 77mm.

Yes that is what I meant to say, 82mm filters are expensive so by using a step down ring, you can use the cheaper 77mm filters. I use a polarizing or a B+W 10 stop filter on mine.
 
I have one on my D700 and love it but as Nikon Fan has said, the 82mm filters aren't cheap.
 
It's good. Probably not better than the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L.
You wouldn't expect it to be for that price anyway.

This must be a very good joke :naughty:

Canon is not perfect for what it costs, but it completely destroys the Sigma day and night. In fact I found the Sigma unusable completely - worst lens I had ever owned. Be warned.

Can't argue about that review saying its as good (if not better) than the Canon L

PS - bear in mind the OP asked about the HSM model (not the older non-HSM which was flawed / not as good)

Um, the Sigma is considerably less than the Canon, even I suspect that if it was better sales would have slumped to zero and ebay would be be full of them at cut throat prices and that is just not the case.

got one and its going up for sale soon

have had great results with it on a 5D2 - the canon vignettes less than the sigma though.

the canon 24-70 can suffer from focus issues and decentering. various les review websites have had problems getting a good copy actually.
 
If you are buying secondhand and don't need the extra reach you may want to consider the 24-60mm f2.8 EX DG. It has had excellent reviews (most say it is better than the 24-70) and is quite a bit smaller than the 24-70mm also it is 77mm filter size.

Food for thought.
 
I picked up the Sigma 24-EX DG DF (old version) not solong ago. Apart from the 82mm filter size being a bit prohibitive, it rarely leaves my camera now, big chunk piece of glass that gets some really lovely results!
 
I use mine wide open all the time and never had issues with it being soft, superb lens in my opinion.

I've got one (Nikon fit on a D90) and love it, very happy with it

Its a very heavy lens though but build quality is excellent

Seems a touch soft at f2.8 at 70mm though but nice and sharp at shorter focal lengths

Nope it's not a joke. Have you used the HSM version? I suspect not judging by your comments; it's an excellent lens.
 
A mixed bag of comments! I want it for my 1000D

Some say soft wide open and some say very Sharp! Maybe the soft ones need sending off to sigma to get sorted as I have read a few reviews about it and a lot of the earlier ones had to be sent back.
 
I've got the non-hsm version of the Sigma 24-70. Great lens but it's certainly soft at 2.8.

I also own the Canon 24-70 2.8L. Personally, the Canon is in a different league - but that's just my findings.
