Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM Nikon.

Finally decided to upgrade from the kit 18-55 lens on my D5100 to the Sigma 2.8 24-70 which seems to have all the bells and whistles, but noticed that it doesn't have any vibration control.
Anyone out there got this lens and has the lack of VC caused you any problems?
I've read through so many reviews that my eyes are sore and most seem to praise it highly - it's got to be a better bet than the kit lens!!!
Would appreciate any thoughts and comments.

My personal view is that unless you are planning to go full frame some time soon you are better off with a lens designed for a crop body so you get a more usable focal length.

So, the equivalent focal length lens would be 18-55 (ish) and Tamron do a good 17-55 f/2.8 with VC so my money would probably go there.

I have the Nikon version, you soon adapt to a lack of vr by ensuring your shutter speed is high enough to eliminate shake. I'll admit the first couple of outings were frustrating as I wasn't using a high enough shutter speed as I was used to vr.

Now I don't miss it at all.

I have the Canon mount of the Sigma 24-70 and I love it. All my other zooms have IS/OS and, although I was tempted by the Tamron 24-70 VC, I don't miss it on the Sigma. I get consistantly good results from it and I use it on my 5D3 and 7D with equal amounts. The AF is fast and with shots at 1/100sec up are fast enough to not notice a lack of OS. The IQ is fairly comparable to my Canon 24-105 f4 IS L lens which I used extensively before I got the Sigma f2.8, and now the most used lenses are the Sigma 24-70 and a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS L MkII and they make a terriffic pairing.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I'll put some thought to what to do - good to hear that the lack of any sort of VC doesn't create any adverse effects - Bank balance may take a hit later !!!

IMO, good technique (loads of practise!) is better than VR/OS at focal lengths under 100mm, even on crop bodies. The f/2.8 should allow shutter speeds over 1/125th s in all but the darkest situations. Be aware though that the HSM version needed (IIRC) by your D5100 is £150 more than the non HSM version 2nd hand - the HSM one is £499 at Mifsuds.
