SIGMA 600mm F/8

I have a Sigma Mirror Telephoto 600mm F8 lens in box and it has been left in a garage for a few years following my Uncle's death and the lens is spotted internally.

Is it worth doing anything with it - throw it away, have it repaired or what value may it be. It has a connection for a Canon although not a tread but two slots and a screw locking ring??? MARKED AS 1.3Ft Macro to Infinity

Help appreciated :bonk:

600mm focusing at 1.3 ft? What sort of magnification is that!?

Yeah it is, he said that in the OP, but still that must be close to 1:1 which is pretty impressive compared to a standard lens. I know my 300f/4 used to have a closest focus of around 2.5m, even my old 24-70 "macro" probably couldn't focus that closely...

nowhere near 1:1 - 1:2.9
 
Ah oh... Well still a lot better than standard lenses. I think the Canon 600 f/4 has a minimum focal distance of around 5m...
 
I have one of these lenses, mine is a Canon FD fit, I use it on my 350D with an FD/EF adapter.

It has a Macro facility of 1:3, it will focus down to about 6 feet.

Mine has some fungus on the main mirror but it still produces good images, on the 350D it acts as a 1200mm @F11, so really should be used on a tripod, I have a T90 and an F1 so I can use it on them as well.

put it on ebay i got £330 for mine,after owning it for a couple of months,and made a tidy profit to my surprise.i got shot of it as i found it difficult to get a perfect focus,of course it was mint,but i still think you could get something for it

So not 1.7ft then, wonder what that means.... Unless that the length which is odd to have just in front of macro to infinity..:thinking:
 
It's a fun lens to use. Slightly low on contrast, but that can be fixed in post processing. Very tricky to nail focussing on it, but then that's part of the fun of using it - very satisfying when you do get it. Don't be tempted to handhold it though - it's light, but 600mm on a crop sensor makes for a lot of vibration. Some pics I've taken with it:

Oh, and if you have it, use the hood! Also check that there is a clear filter in the filter drawer at the back of the lens - this filter is in a non-parallel beam path and so is part of the optical solution even though it's just a planar piece of glass!
 
they're not too shoddy. the rocket is OOF as an OOF thing though :P :lol:

Thanks! Shuttle's not OOF in the normal sense though - the lens was correctly focussed at infinity, but it was 12 miles away at 2pm in 30+ degree Florida heat! Atmospheric distortion would do that to anything less than an adaptive optics astronomy setup!
