Sigma 70-300 macro on and off?

Just a quick question about the Sigma 70-300 kit lens. It has the macro mode on this. Obviously designed as a telephoto macro..

What are the cons for having macro mode on all the time? Apart from the fact it can only be used at 200mm+
 
Just remember that it is only macro by name not by actual magnification!

As I read it it has 1:2 ratio not a true macro of 1:1

Therefore like all such lenses the macro function is certainly useful is situations where you either cannot justify the expense of Macro lens or expediency when you need to 'get closer' for that shot and then crop.

PS ref the ratio ~ 1:1 means that a 10mm bug will be 10mm on the sensor, hence 1:2 the same 10mm bug will be 5mm on the sensor. How much you can fill the frame with any macro variant will depend on the minimum focus distance!

If the lens/camera hunts for focus in macro mode, there's a lot more range to get through before achieving a lock.
 
Not really relevant to the question but I've found that I have to switch mine to Manual focus and play with the focus to take it out of macro mode.

Maybe not relevant, but good to know that mine isn't as 'broken' as my uncle thought it was :D
