ive been bought the

Sigma 70-300mm F4- 5.6 DG Macro lens

i have a Nikon D40 and i believed that this lens would auto focus

now the problem is i cannot seem to get it to AF, is there and buttons/switch i need to move/press to get it to work

it is not a problem if it turs out i can only manually foucus, i was just wondering if it is actually possable to AF

I think there are two versions of this lens - one will autofocus on the D40 the other wont.

The HSM version is the autofocus one. Linky
 
I think the reason it won't autofocus on the D40 is because it doesn't have a motor inside the lens. The D40 doesnt have a drive motor either.

Bit cheeky of Nikon but its obviously to keep the costs down.
