Sigma 85 1.4 or Canon 85 1.8?

Anyone have any real world comparisons of the two, I'm not overly fussed about the extra half stop but whats the best IQ ?

I don't know about the Canon f1.8 but the Siggy does well against the f1.2L...

PS. Looking at the bokeh the Canon f1.8 looks horrible (IMVHO) and as this is such a big part of the reason to buy a lens like this it's reason enough to buy something else, like the Sigma or the Canon f1.2.

Did you confuse 85mm with 50mm f/1.8. The later is a completely disgusting, but 85mm is really wonderful on all counts.

That's what I wanted to hear, I have looked at some reviews the sigma is an exceptional lens but just wanted to compare the two, main thing is that the canon is half the price.

Agree that the 50 1.8 has poor bokeh glad they sorted it with the 85 although the 85 doesn't look like a plastic toy

Er... no, I was talking about the bokeh shown in the links that you provided. You can plainly see that it's not round and instead is more hexagonal.

I know that the Canon is cheaper but the bokeh is such an important thing with a lens like this that it's well worth thinking about unless cost is a major issue. The Siggy may cost more but seems to be getting very good reviews even against the more expensive Canon L.

I don't know where you are pulling that from. Wide open it is perfectly circular, and very slowly becomes octagonal by f/4.

I think these shots should be enough to illustrate what bokeh is really like:

Both look pretty circular and creamy to me, at least no worse than 24-70L or 100mm macro.

From the link you posted. You can clearly see the octagonal bokeh in the sample shots on the linked site. I prefer it to be more rounded.

It might not matter to many but one thing that I'm into is shallow DoF shots so I tend to choose lenses with wider aperturtes and nice bokeh. Sorry but I couldn't choose the Canon 85mm f1.8 on the basis of it's bokeh but I do appreciate that it's a sharp lens at a reasonable price and I can see how it could / will appeal to many.

Actually after thinking about it I decided that 85mm was too long / too sort for me and I'm sticking with my 50's and 150mm f2.8... all of which have more preferable bokeh to the Canon 85mm f1.8 IMVHO. Others may disagree.
