Hi all,

I have been struggling with my Sigma 24-70 ever since I got it a while ago, This is my second copy after sending the first back and requesting a replacement.

After getting my 7D at the weekend I finally got a chance to do some testing and making adjustments accordingly. After a few hours of various tests I have settled on a +15 adjustment, I knew that this lens was capable of giving very sharp shots as I have used it in manual mode a few times and have been really pleased with the results.

After sending an email to Sigma UK I will be sending the lens to them for repair / re-calibration come Monday, What kind of a turn-around am I looking at? I would like your input in regards any previous experiances, I have a trip planned in a few weeks and currently debating if I should rent a lens or if mine will be back in time?

Thanks in advance

Mark

I find them to be pretty fast with their turnaround times. I actually had my Sigma 24-70 repaired earlier this year (for a focus/zoom locking issue) and if I remember correctly, the lens was back in my hands in under 2 weeks.

thanks for the replies.

I believe that It is front focusing pretty bad, As I say I have had to dial in +15 in the Micro Adjustment which has made it 100% better. I want this fixing as I may be getting a second body after the new year and at present Im not sure if I will be getting one with Micro Adjust.

The lens is only just over a month or so old, It will be repaired under warranty.

I am really trying hard not to be put off these lenses as they produce some fantastic shots, Its just such a shame their QC is not up to standard.

Will be packing it up this weekend and sending off to them first thing Monday morning, let hope they fix it ASAP.

thanks

Sigma quote 2-3 weeks as their standard repair time target, but in my experience of maybe a dozen repairs they often don't achieve that. My most recent experience was a 120-300mm f/2.8 which I sent to them in September and got back last week. And to add insult to injury, that was a re-work of a previous repair (sticky iris) which they hadn't fixed properly. All in all that lens has been out of comission for 3 months or more because of a trivial fault. Compare that to the 2-3 day average turnround which Canon achieve at Elstree and people wonder why we don't have more Sigma lenses...

my 24-70 went to sigma for sharpness issues. They had to send it back to the factory in Japan? i was without it for about 2 months

ive had nothing but good times from sigma service.. concidering my 120-300 needed new cams (after the previous owner had bent them) imported from japan they turned it around what i concider pretty damn quick. they also had my 70-200 in recently for a standard service, which came back within the stated 2-3 week turnaround. add that to the free 120-300 tripod mount that they sent me after they could not repair mine which is a £180 part and ive got nothing but praise for them.

as for comparing sigma and canons service dept, im lead to believe that sigmas service dept is conciderably smaller than canons..

Thanks for the replies everyone,

Well I sent it off today, Insured and Tracked. lets hope that their turn around time is within their quoted time frame. I am in two minds now as to whether I should bother with them again, this is the second copy that I have had and both ended up being duds.

will give you all an update once I have some more news.

Thanks

I'm still waiting for my 100-300mm that was sent to them on september 21. It's currently in Japan, but they've not been in touch with me yet to tell me when it's coming back - despite me calling them at the start of last week.

To give an update, my lens came back on Friday. It ended up going to Japan and coming back. They replaced the outer body and 3 of the internal lens units. As a result, it's effectively the 2nd generation model. I originally sent it in simply for calibration and that's what they quoted me for when they decided to send it to Japan. And that's what they ended up charging me! All that work and new components for £35! Fantastic service that deserves recognition - well done Sigma!

lad you got it sorted, so the lens is good now.

Seems to be - I've only done some quick test snaps. It'll be a week or two before I can get out to test it properly, but first impressions are good.

Just a quick update

I contacted Sigma this afternoon to see about a status update.
I was told that it is currently with their techs but so far from the notes they have found an issue with the lens hunting. They have said this could be part of the problem and will be correcting this issue before they go any further. They are hoping a new firmware update will solve the problem.

Once they have sorted this issue they are going to re-test and then see if the original problem still remains or if this has fixed it.

Well another update.

I spoke to sigma again this afternoon. They have finished repairing and testing the lens and should be with me either tomorrow or early next week.

It turns out that they have replaced all the circuitry due to them not being able to update the firmware on the existing one (for some reason it had a not writable chip in it). This cured the Hunting problem that they picked up on and they have also re-calibrated it. fair play to the guy that has been repairing and testing it, Although he tested it against their normal target test when he went out and tried a few "Real World" shots he was not happy with it, He has since re-calibrated again and double checked everything. All the testing was done using a recently calibrated 50D.

I will let you all know my own results once it is back.
