Sigma vs Canon

Is there any difference in terms of image quality, between a sigma lens and the Canon equivalent.

I've got the Sigma 70-300 DG macro, and wondered if the Canon 70-300 is any better ?

Or is the Sigma better ?

I've seen the Canon ones go quite cheaply on Flea Pay recently and wondered if it was worth changing ?

Anyone got any direct comparisons ?

Churz.

From what i understand there are many different canon 70-300 (well some 75-300), so i guess it depends which one you have seen going cheap on ebay. I have the latest one, the IS USM and it is a very good quality lens, i cant comment on the sigma as i have not used it, but i did have the Tamron 70-300 beforehand, and can honestly say i have noticed the difference since upgrading!

The Canon 70-300 USM IS is a really good lens. I can't comment on the Sigma, having never used it, but advantages the canon have is image stabilisation, USM (silent, fast) focussing, and might (but I'm not sure) have some of the expensive glass that L lenses have in to reduce chromatic abber-thingy. I love mine!

Yes, it does have the ultra-low dispersion glass element.

The 75-300mm IS didn't - it's a 1995 design, and really isn't that good. All the other 75-300mm Canon zooms are budget models - i.e. Canon EF 75-300mm F4.0-5.6 III £139, Canon EF 75-300mm F4.0-5.6 USM III £179 - and basically you get what you pay for.

The 70-300mm IS is the one to get. One German reviews site describes it as a "stealth L", and I've seen debates in other forums about this classification. It's a complement to the lens that it merits this discussion - it certainly is very good.

I had a bad experience with Stigma & will never buy one again.

I have a Sigma 70-300mm Apo lens and love it to bits, no complaints at all from me about it quality wise. If you are in any doubt though the best option is to maybe rent out the Canon and try it out first before deciding whether or not it is worth changing to it.

Some shots from my Siggy.

I've only had my 400D about 2 or 3 months but out of all the kit Ive bought so far Ive got to say my Siggy 70-3000mm is definitely my favourite. Never tried the Canon alternative though to compare it to.

Mine is the non APO version !

I've noticed a purple fringe on certain things when used @ 300mm .

I think its the 70-300 USM lens I've seen on ebay, they go for about 60 - 90 quids.

Will look for the IS version though as mentioned by Strolls !

Thanks !

The only "Canon 70-300 USM" I know of is the IS USM, which goes for around £300! There's a set of 75-300's, but I think they're held in fairly low regard?

You're entirely correct. It's so easy to get confused between all models with such similar numbers.
