Sign of impending doom?

Shooting a rally at the weekend I noticed for the first time that my lens was registering an aperture of 00 and wouldn't autofocus.
After considering the possibilities of the bokeh that might produce, mmmmm, I tinkered about and found that the lens has a slight bit of movement when located on the body. By making a minute adjustment of turning the lens, it would then register again on the camera.
I assume that the movement is what is causing the contacts to not seat properly and thus lose the settings readout.
Is this a sign of something more sinister about to happen, or is it just something I will have to put up with?

Matty,

You might want to check that none of the screws on either the camera's or lens' mounting plate have worked loose. I've not had it happen with a lens, but have had it happen with a TC.

I agree and a quick clean of the contacts may help also

I get that when using cheap converters , or nudging the lens release button

This happend when the screws on the Lens Mount became loose. I just tightened them up and all the issues cleared. I now carry a small posi-drive screwdriver with me when out shooting..

Brilliant help thank you all. I will dig out a small screwdriver this evening and check it out. Any clues on what is best to clean the contacts with? If not I will google it when I get back home!

yep definitely something to cause the lens contacts to not connect - body always says 00 when there's no lens on so worth checking as stated above
