Silent Pictures

Not sure where this should go but here goes....

Well, not by me but this was a request I had put to me yesterday by a wife's friend.

She's 'into' photography and recently bought herself the 550D package from Jessops (inc flash/Tamron lenses/filters etc you name it - just shy of a grand) because she said "... I want a posh camera like you...."

Now she's had it on Auto since (fair enough she's new to it - but never had her old Fuji bridge off Auto) but yesterday took the biscuit; she asked me how to take silent pictures. Now for a few minutes both my wife and I were a bit  and didn't have a clue what she meant .... but eventually it was that she didn't want the camera clicking when you took a picture, a bit too noisy so which setting can you use just like the beep :cuckoo:

Now I said I'd show her how to use live view next time I was round but still :cuckoo: :bang: you'd think some people would know about these before hand. :bang:

Anyway not much of thread but an intersting comment I thought I might share... :D

I fear you are in for a new world of 'how do I...?) phone calls.

Get her to do a course, or failing that...RTFM ;)

RTFM...???? Nah too much like hard work when I'm there. As for the course she wants to do a course with me but I'm no going on basic course for them to teach me what I already know about what the settings do and how to transfer/PP. I know I'm not an expert, its just a hobby but we're a different levels.

This always annoys me. The number of people owning DSLR's and leaving them on full auto is shocking.

Now I know that most DSLR are more than capable of taking great shots on auto and whenever I can't be bothered to think or I'm handing my camera to my better half I use auto too. What annoys me is that people will jump head first into this without any sort of background knowledge of what an SLR is and the basics of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. I made sure I knew all of these and how they worked with each other before shelling out a measly £400 on my first DSLR kit.

... and breathe ...

I think it's more a jealousy thing though. I want more money to spend on stuff I know nothing about :(. Fair play though if she is actually interested in learning more about real photography techniques.

Scary isnt it, I can't get over the amount of people who you see in Jessops being sold hundreds of pounds worth of SLR's complete with extra lenses and flash guns, filters, bags etc, and they clearly haven't got a clue what they are buying.

Doesn't the shutter still click in live view?, I know it's open for viewing but I thought it still cycled when you actually take a shot.

A few weeks ago I was walking around hyde park on a sunday morning and was amazed at the number of people with DSLR's just taking snap shots.
Out of all the people with camera's that day i think I only saw one P&S.
I do not know what settings people where using but looking at the weay they where taking pics of the ducks and swans on the lake i bet it wasent anything other than auto.

To be fair though when you loook at the price of a decent P&S camera these days you can get a DSLR with a kit lens for just a little more and if the salesman/woman does his or her job properly then they will be sold.
