Silly Question.. Apologies in advance

Silly question coming, I apologise in advance. I'm looking at the Tamron 28 -75mm f2.8 lens for my Nikon D40x. The lens has IF (internal focusing), so I'll be able to auto focus on my nikon d40x, even though the d40x has no internal motor, right? Basically what I'm asking is whether Tamrons IF lenses are the same as Nikon AFS lenses in that they have a motor in the lens. Just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into.
TIA

I'm only a dumb Canon user, ignore anything I say. :( Although it just shows how cheapskate that Noink lot are :p

Thanks for the correction Joe :)

Well Joe has Nikon and Dod has Canon (and so do I) but my money is on Dod on this one

Only Nikon AF-S and AF-I, and Sigma HSM lenses will autofocus on the D40x. The Tamron 28 -75mm f2.8 will work, but won't auto focus.
Edit; And I have a d40x, unlike these uneducated Canon users, so I win by default.;)

Knew there was a good reason I don't do the lottery :)

Seeing as though you have a d40x I'll take your word for it. Do you know of any similar Sigma lenses that have HSM?

Thanks for the support :p

Had a read up via google about that camera. seems it is a ploy by Nikon to make people buy their own make lenses? or was I reading the wrong pages ? :)

There you go, thats my shopping list. erm, I mean compatible lens list.

Edit; So your probably looking at;
Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED AF-S
or
Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX ASP HSM although you'd loose quite a lot at the telephoto end with this one.

I was kind of hoping for more choice, but it looks like there's only one suitable Sigma lens. The Nikon ones are so expensive!! I have the D40x on trial, would you exchange it? If so for what. (Not the Canon 400d, I tried it, and although it's a great camera, it's not for me)

Not really. It was more just a way of getting the price down for the D40 by not including a focus motor. I recon Tamron and Tokina might join in with the Hypersonic focusing eventually, but for now I have quite a range to choose from as you can see above.:)

More and more lenses will become compatible over time.

Instead of doing what Canon did with their change of the FD mount to the EF mount, which meant that everyone had to buy all new lenses, Nikon are slowly phasing in their mount changes. The Nikon F mount has been around since 1959 , and all Nikkor lenses made after 1978 will work (after a fashion) on a modern Nikon body.

Give it some time, and all new Nikon F mount lenses will be AF-S or equvalent. All the third party manufacturers have to do is to put focusing motors in the bodies of all their lenses, which they already have to do for Canon EF mount.

Its a pain for the early adopters though.

Id echo what Joe is saying really. the AF-S compatible lens list will only get bigger and bigger.

All the ones Joe posted are compatible btw, they should all have HSM after them. Look at my list for the full range you have to choose from. I love my D40x. There are a few niggles, but the lens selections isn't amongst them. If however you feel thatyou want the full range of lenses available to you, you might want to look at the D80 instead.

I can still hear the howls of protest from Canon users with substantial lens collections!

It was pure luck though on Nikon's part- their existing mount could house the electrical connections becoming necessary with AF and the increased electronics, whereas Canon's mount simply couldn't.

I guess I'll just stick with the 18 - 200mm VR lens that I've got for now, and see what else comes along then. I want a good portrait lens for use indoors, and although I love the lens I have, it's not really fast enough, and doesn't give me the bokeh I want.

Im hoping (and spreading rumours :nono: ) that sigma will update the current 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG with HSM this year to compete with the mighty Nikon AF-S 28-70 f/2.8 IF-ED. My guess is if they do produce one, it will be priced at around £500, judging by the difference in price between current similar HSM/AF-S lens.
