I have a Sigma 75-300 Apo, nothing special, 55mm filter thread. When I put a normal, everyday skylight filter on it, the filter touches the glass objective before the screw is tight. Am I really needing a filter for protection and if so, is there something I am missing when I buy them? I thought "Filter, 55mm, that'll do" as you do... Do I need to be thinking about clearance as well?

This could be a can of worms...

For one, that filter is probably not suitable for the lens - but I'm guessing you know that already. In my opinion you don't need to protect your lens with a filter unless you know you will be somewhere with sea spray or there is going to be projectile dust & debris.

For general use, fingermarks, scraped etc just put the hood in position and you will be well protected.

Ah. So that last 15 minutes digging around for a 55 to 58mm step up ring was wasted then... which is cool as I don't have a spare 58mm cap anyway!

Thanks for the reassurance, I shall leave it in commando mode then :D
