"Slave Bulbs"

my mum managed to find this thing that fits into a standard bulb fitting and fires when it sees another flash. Would this be called a slave bulb?

Is it poretty standard, it sounds pretty cool to me but then lighting is all new to me.

However, is it possible to set the amount of flash on these units? The one we have is oretty cheap. Should be fun to mess around with.

Extremely low power, very harsh light, difficult to modify the quality of the light, and not adjustable for power output.

I suppose they could be useful though

I bought one last year, and yep it flashes, but I wish I'd saved my money and gone for a flashhead.
