Right, I am wondering if it is possible to use a ring flash, sigma or canon at the moment, and use it in conjunction with my 430 EX II, and have the 430 as a slave to react off the ring flash?

If so, how would I go around this?

Any help welcome.

YES. I don't know if the 430 EX has an optical slave mode BUT you can get a small adapter that sits on the hotshoe and converts any flash to optical slave.
 
Ahhhh that would be so perfect!!

Any advice on which is a good make etc? Or a link?
 
I got mine from FITP but I don't think he chose to sell them in the end. It might be worth PMing him. I have seen them on eBay but none seem to be as good.

These are the ones I have for my own use and the one Darren is referring to. I just picked that auction at random, you might find them cheaper for other sellers.

As far as optical slaves go, yes. Having said like any other similar products they're only really suitable for indoor use. If you're planning to use it in anything approaching bright sunshine then forget it....
 
The authentic (and expensive) Canon ringflash should act as a master and the 430 as a slave ......... you won't need anything else .......
 
Well the ring flash was on my list.... Cheers for all the advice it's been a big help!
 
What are you planning to use the ringflash for? Remember that the macro type aren't really any use for portrait work.....
 
Portrait and macro, that why I will end up going for the canon rather than the specific macro sigma. For portrait will be working from 17-55 range so it's fairly close too

If it's the MR-14EX you mean that's a macro one too......
 
Hmm just checked.

They both guide number 14m....so I assume both would be ok for portraits from max 4-5m away?
 
I don`t think a ring flash fires a peflash (mine don`t) so you will have no bother using a slaveadaptor

You can, Calumet do the Sunpak DX-12r, but, in common with the other two, it's a macro ringflash.

You can pick up the Rayflash adapters for the Canon flashguns direct from the importers on Ebay at a discount, that might be a better option...
 
I take it that will give me the ether power from the speedlight etc? Will it work as well for macro at the same time?
 
As David says, some Canon guns won't work with a regular optical slave. They fire once, then lock up. I thought the TypeII guns were okay for this, but someone on here recently had trouble. You need a special optical slave, like the Sonia slave (from Flash Zebra) which is modified for the job.

However, both the Canon ringflash and macro lights work as masters to control the remote 430 with wireless E-TTL, so that is a sorted way forward.

But, there's no way you will be able to do much with either of those at 4-5m range. Nowhere near enough power. You'd be better off with the RayFlash for that, preferably powered by a 580EX gun. That is also good for macro and, with a 580 on board as a master that too will control a remote 430 gun.
 
Richard just measured the room I will be using, measurement way off! Lol the room is 3x4 ish so I will be working in the 1.5 to 2.5 range.... Would that suit?

That makes a massive difference! Canon MR-14EX has a guide number of 14, which is very similar to the pop-up flash, so see how you get on with that.

I use a RingFlash Adapter (similar to RayFlash) with a 580EX which I like very much. It's a bit of a compromise for macro and fashion/portraits - arguably too big for very close macro work, and not powerful enough for fashion (it loses quite a lot of light inside) but I don't do much 1:1 macro - more flowers and stuff at 1:4 or 1:2 - and the 580EX punches out enough power for normalish distance portraity things, and I can push the ISO on a 5D2. I also like the E-TTL master facility that is retained.

It depends so much on what you want to do.
